Science and art

Colour changing milk. An experiment about chemical reaction.
We linked this with some science art, mixing primary colours together to make secondary colours.
Red + yellow = orange.    Blue + yellow = green.    Red + blue = purple.

We are scientists!

We were lucky enough to experiment with static electricity in our class recently. We were visited by a friend of the school and real scientist, Raechel. She brought a real Van Der Graaf machine which generates static electricity. Very cool!

Feeling the pressure!

Using soluble aspirin inside a small film cannister we investigated air pressure.
Pressure building...pressure building...pop!

Term 2 is SCIENCE TERM !!

It has been an exciting and explosive start to term two! Our topic this term is science and we will be learning to think like scientists as we explore and experiment. Keep checking our blog to follow our scientific journey and see what we get up to. It promises to be a term of excitement and discovery!

 *Think like a scientist*
  • Predict - What do you already know? What do you think could happen?
  • Observe - Look, listen, touch, smell, taste (check with the teacher!)
  • Explain (share ideas) - What did you observe?  Why do you think that happened?
  • Ask Questions - What questions do you still have?
-        What do we need to find more information about?
-        What are your ‘what if?’ questions?
-        What are you still wondering about?
  • Reflect (think) - Why did it happen?  What did you find out/discover?  What do you want to learn more about now?
  • Record findings - draw, write, label, caption, photograph

A focus on responsibility

Focusing on taking responsibilty for our belongings, our choices and our learning is something we are all enjoying at Owairaka at the moment. We are growing our independence and we know that it feels good to do your best. We are finding that being responsible for ourselves builds self esteem and helps us to feel proud of ourselves.

A very clucky day in room 16

Wow! We were lucky enough to have some very cute visitors come to our class today.

Eliza and her mum brought in their new pet baby chickens. The chicks were three weeks old and their 'down' was turning to feathers. We learned about how to raise chicks and how important caring for animals is. The amazing writers of room 16 then wrote amazingly about their experience.
Huge thank you to Eliza and her family for making the effort to give us this experience!
